This segment covers so much ground, and with limited space, in less pictures than I'd like. The summer has been crazy, and the craziness has rarely slowed. Although it jumps around a lot, this will hopefully cover many of the tales from this summer!

Fall Bomber's Moon Ball

Our Fall Bomber's Moon Ball took place across the ramp, still hindered by our sprinkler system. Thankfully, this did not seem to deter people. There were a lot of attendees, more than any fall dance in recent memory. The membership help was WAY up as well. I couldn't believe how quickly the whole thing got torn down! It was truly amazing team work!

Blog Update - 25June to 03October

Alright, clearly I am lagging behind with the Blog updates. I have had offers to help, which is great, and I will be taking people up on that! Thank you! This way we can keep people more up-to-date and keep the blog rolling. I apologize for the time in between posts, it's amazing how fast the weeks fly by.

The summer went by way too fast. We're into fall, flying season is winding down, and we're looking at another winter of work. The B-25 gave us a few problems this year... one engine failing, two other engines needing repair. It was a busy summer for the maintenance team, but they did a great job of keeping Miss Mitchell in the air! The airshows were plentiful, thanks to Jim Gilmore, and we were able to attend many shows and give many rides! Thanks to everyone who flew or crewed the trips!

The BT-13, L-5 and PT-22 began to give rides this summer. It was an excellent first year, and there will be increased focus on getting the small birds out there and making money! The rides are more affordable than the B-25 and it can bring an experience to a lot more people!

This years Open House was held on Labor Day. It was not attended as well as we had hoped, but people still enjoyed the event and vendors want to come back next year. We plan to coordinate with Kaposia Days (South St. Paul Days) to bring the entire airport in to the fold, and have our Open House as part of the festivities.

The Fall Bombers Moon Ball was a huge success. We had more attendance than the past few fall dances, and people had a blast! A few new ideas were presented this year, and we have more in store for next, so come check it out, either as a volunteer or a patron!

The sprinkler system is coming along nicely. We've established that the current system can be reactivated. This means a huge amount of savings! We are waiting for final approval from the fire marshal. The next step is to install the water main. This will take some digging between the motor pool and the hangar. Our goal is to have the system working before the spring dance... Your donations can help make that happen!

Again, I apologize for how long it's taken to get another post out. You can expect to hear from the blog more often in the near future!

Aviation Inspiration Day

The First Annual Aviation Inspiration Day was a resounding success, drawing in over 250 people. Families brought their kids to the event for a fun, educational experience. There were activities for everyone, but the focus was on girls, and the day was designed to give them the inspiration and courage to pursue their dreams, whether they involve aviation or not. Girls who attended Lynda Meeks Girls With Wings class were given priority on the Young Eagles rides, and had opportunities to even fly the aircraft! We had our aircraft outside, and kids flocked to tour the B-25, get rides in the WWII vehicles, and enjoy a free lunch, care of Wipaire, and served by Iron Chef Ron Legg and crew. The event was a collaborative idea between Lynda and Amy Lauria. Lynda, seeing it's success, is working to have events like ours hosted around the country (there are currently talks about one in Arizona). The Hangar dance went very well, and even though it took a lot of hard work, the location suited our needs just fine. It was great to see so many members experience their first dance with the Wing, and just how massive an experience it can be.

State of the MN Wing

The goal of this meeting was to gather as many members as possible, have everyone get to know each other, and define the goals and struggles facing the MN Wing. The staff felt that the idea was received warmly, and that members want to have more of this type of meeting. If you attended and would like to comment, please let a staff member know!

Blog Update - 26 April to 24 June

Wow, two whole months. I truly apologize for the lack of activity on the blog. It's due in part to a computer malfunction (Brian Strom lost many pictures when his hard drive crashed) and with how busy things have been in the past two months. We've had our first State of the MN Wing address take place, complete with Member rides. We've had our Hangar dance. Aviation Inspiration Day was a hit, and we're in the middle of our SECOND engine change on Miss Mitchell in the last two months. As I said, busy.

The State of the MN Wing address was focused on our progress and hurdles that have been encountered over the last year. We discussed the Sprinkler issues, the Dance and the fact that our small aircraft are now able to give rides. Many members attended, and a lot of ideas were generated. It was very productive, and can be an expected event every spring. Members were given rides in the aircraft, though the first ride in the B-25 led to the first engine removal of the year, due to a gasket that had been installed incorrectly when the engine was assembled. Other than that, the day was a wonderful way to get to know new members, or members who are unable to attend regularly.

The Dance was a great success as usual, but took place across the ramp due to our sprinkler issues. We approached the city with over 50 members attending the city council meeting, and they agreed to allow the dance this spring. We brought in around 700 people, and made a great profit! Everyone had a great time, and the weather held out for us.

Aviation Inspiration Day was a first time event, and was focused on getting kids, especially young women, interested in the museum, WWII and aviation in general. The event was amazing, and hugely successful, especially for a first time event. Around 250 people attended, they were able to see the museum and aircraft, tour Wipaire, shop the PX, attend a Girls With Wings seminar, get rides with EAA Young Eagles pilots, and enjoy a free lunch paid for by Wipaire and served by our members. It was a wonderful day, and we expect to host it at least once a year.

Now, on to the engine. We had our first engine change due to gaskets, as I stated earlier. We accomplished the change just after the dance, and got to a paid appearance in Lakeville. We had a repair to perform at the engine of Aviation Inspiration Day, and once that was completed, we were all satisfied with the new engine. It ran well, sounded good, and we were able to attend all of our scheduled appearances. It completed a number of flights with the P-51 to shoot video for The Restorers TV Program and the Rise Above movie. After all the filming was complete, some training was performed, and on the second training flight, the engine temps rose and the oil pressure dropped. Doug Rozendaal, who was Pilot in Command during the flight, chose to feather the engine and turn back to Fleming. Once on the ground, we checked the oil screen, and found silver chunks, indicating that the master rod bearing failed. This means a full overhaul. We quickly sent out the engine that had gasket problems to be repaired, and began pulling the engine that just failed. The gasket damaged engine has been returned to us, and has just been hung on the aircraft. From this point, we will get the prop on, the oil coolers in and be back on the road in time for Pan-o-Prog in Lakeville. Thank you to everyone who has participated in the maintenance. Our schedule will barely be affected because of the hard work of everyone involved. THANK YOU!

First Show of the Year

Early in the flying season is the Doolittle Raiders Reunion. Having a B-25 operation, it is an important event for us. We like to attend for various reasons, but the most prevalent is to honor the Doolittle Raiders who are still with us, and those who have passed. This year, the Reunion took place in Lincoln, NE. It was not nearly as large and flamboyant as last years, but it was none-the-less important and an honor to attend.

The Grape Escape!

This year we put together an off site gather called The Grape Escape. A Wine Tasting/Fundraiser, it focused on Wine and Warbirds. A rock band was featured (the Red Pens) and the CAF had a presence in numerous ways. The event was successful, and will be something we continue to expand on in the future. Thank you to all who helped make it happen!

Around the Hangar

So much work takes place at the hangar every week, it's hard to keep up! If you've been around, you know that there are constantly new faces. There is a large level of participation by younger folks (early 30s and younger) and an increase in the 40 over crowd as well. I believe it'd be safe to say that the Minnesota Wing is one of the most diverse CAF units age wise. It's been great to see everyone work together so well, and work so hard to accomplish the goals of the CAF. I can't wait to see what the next year will bring!

Blog Update - 19March to 25 April

Good Afternoon Everyone!
I hope everyone enjoyed the holiday weekend!

In the last month, quite a bit has happened... some positive, and some that may not seem as positive. First, the weather... it was positive and now, not so much! Having the hangar door open for such a short time was a horrible tease, and has many of us wishing for summer that much more. None-the-less, having the hangar door open, and comfortably occupying the hangar is such a great thing after the long winter.

When that time rolls around, the pilots get anxious and want to go fly... so that means the end of maintenance season and on to the airshow season. First show of the year was the Doolittle Raider's Reunion at Lincoln, NE. The crew had some problems with the right engine, but worked them out and it was a very successful appearance.

The biggest topic at the hangar has been related to all of the media attention hitting us lately. Yes, we have had our events, private and public (this includes Dances) shut down. It seems that a lack of a sprinkler system is against code, and the building has been deemed unsafe for large crowds. This is something we have been dealing with for over a year now. Our funding (the bonding bill) was rejected by the City of South St. Paul because of the stipulations attached to it. Since that is the case, attention has come our way and the goal is to gain support and funding so that we can improve the hangar with a new sprinkler system. We want to assure everyone that the loss of events will NOT be the end of the Minnesota Wing. There is a plan, and we have a huge amount of support. The media is creating a massive amount of interest, and generating new members as well. This will end up being a huge benefit to us, in the long run!

On to the dances... We plan to have them. We have gotten permission to use a new hangar across the ramp (it has a sprinkler system). It won't be the same feel, but we believe people will be receptive to the goal of getting us back into our hangar, and help contribute. We are in process of finalizing with the City of Inver Grove Heights (this hangar is just across city lines, and is IGH's jurisdiction). So, we'll need help! The Spring Dance will be on May 21st.

Despite the lack of private events, the hangar will have a lot of work going on. This will give us an opportunity to organize and clean. Parts, tools, museum items, everything could use going through. This will be a great opportunity, but will need a lot of support! Even if you aren't sure of the difference between a magneto and can of paint, you can still help!

The MAPS Air Museum in North Canton, OH is currently working on restoring a rare Martin B-26 Marauder (40-1459) back to air worthy condition. She was the 99th B-26 built by Martin and crashed landed in British Columbia, Canada, on January 16, 1942. The project was started back in the mid 90’s and doesn’t look like it’ll be done any time soon. However; when it’s finished, it’ll will be one of only two flying B-26’s in the world today.

Work around the hangar has been punctuated by a couple of parties the last few weeks. The Wing received the Llyod P. Nolen Unit Achievement award for 2010. This is the highest award given by HQ to a Wing or Squadron. We have accomplished a lot in the last year, and it was wonderful to be recognized for it! The Wing hosted pizza, cake and coffee for members for their achievement! Roxie Legg celebrated a birthday last Saturday at the hangar, and that brought sloppy joes and cake for the members, hosted by Ron Legg. Two weeks in a row of food and cake! Work didn't slow down much however, as you can see!

Winter Staff Conference

The Wing Staff visited Midland Texas late February for the Winter Staff Conference, hosted by CAF HQ. All of the Staff felt that the experience was very positive, and learned quite a bit. Ideas were generated, and are already taking shape at the hangar. The conference also hosts the awards dinner, and newly formed CAF's Got Talent contest.

Blog Update - 19 February to 18 March

All,
Good Evening and congratulations on making it through another Minnesota winter! As usual, the coming of spring means that the maintenance season is ending, and flying season is about to begin! This weekend was the B-25 ground school, and soon all the pilots will be getting recurrent. The work that people have put in over the last month is astounding. People have come out of the woodwork to help, and are excited at the prospect of their FIRST airshow season. For those of us who have done this for so many years, it is exciting to see all of the anxious anticipation for what will likely be a lifelong memory for people.

Although maintenance season is ending, that does not mean work will not be taking place. We are not able to do weddings or events at the hangar this year, so this gives us an opportunity. We can make a mess..... but only for the sake of cleaning up! I fully expect to see items spread around the hangar... cataloging of parts, tools and museum items. Straightening up our filing systems and creating a slick running, organized and visually appealing maintenance/museum space. We will needs lots of help with this, so let me know if you are available!

The Motor Pool just got a brand new vehicle tomorrow! Well, not new, but new to us! A 1942 Dodge WC-21 1/2 ton vehicle was approved for trade with our 1953 Willys Jeep. The vehicle needs some work, but is in excellent shape! Its engine and transmission have been rebuilt and are very strong, and its body is free of rust rot. This will be a great new project for the motor pool, and they are looking to get it completed before 2012.

I am personally very excited about a new educational program that we have been working on. We are partnering with Girls With Wings to host Aviation Inspiration Day, a girl-centric event with an interactive educational seminar by GWW founder Lynda Meeks, tours of Wipaire and the CAF, lunch sponsored by Wip and hosted by us, and EAA Young Eagle flights. We are getting as many ideas together as we can to inspire young women to follow their dreams of flight, and are hoping to have a large turnout. It will take place on May 28th at Fleming Field. The focus of the motorpool has been the 1943 Willys Jeep. A lot of miles have been put on it, and they were not easy miles. The vehicle is in need of some work, and the motor pool is digging in. So far, the front suspension and brakes have been taken care of. The engine was just removed, and they started taking it apart. It will take time to overhaul, but once it's done, it will be a beautiful example of a WWII Jeep!

The Outside Air

Our PT-22 pilot training came from Terry Freedman, a CAF PT-22 pilot out of California. He was lucky enough to be involved with the Centennial of Naval Flight. Here is his write-up and accompanying photos.

I had the privilege and great luck to be able to participate in one of the most
amazing aviation events of my life in the parade of nearly 200 aircraft that
passed up the San Diego Bay on Saturday the 12th of February. Flying the
Commemorative Air Force Ryan PT-22, I was the first airplane in the parade that
followed the Blue Angels up the Bay. The weather was absolutely spectacular! You
could see all the way to Honolulu! I brought my wife Gini along to be the
photographer to document this truly Historic event and she got some great shots!
It is hard for me to describe the feelings of that day and flight, it is one I
will always remember!

PS: For the history buffs, the Navy did operate 200 NR-1's, the Navy version of
the Army PT-22, all at the then NAS Cecil field in Jacksonville, Fl.
PPS: Gini's dad was a Hell Cat pilot in WWII so this had some special meaning
for her too!

A Look Back

Last year's first airshow was the Doolittle Raider's Reunion. This was a historic airshow, bringing together 17 B-25's. Most of you have seen pictures from this event, and there have been some video's floating around as well. This video, produced by Adam White (Red Tail Reborn) is a clip from his new show "The Restorers". A focus on Miss Mitchell and the Minnesota Wing, The Doolittle Raiders, and the Doolittle Reunion makes up this episode. It is amazing video, and very well put together. Blog Update - 02February to 18February

Good Evening Everyone!
The Blog post is a little late this evening, I hope this isn't too inconvenient for you! We've had a significant amount of work progress at the Wing, activity in all areas is booming. The parking lot has been full every Saturday, and most Wednesdays, and that is a great sign! Maintenance has progressed quickly on all aircraft. Some have significant repairs in their near future, some just need a dusting off and they are ready to fly!

Motor Pool is making good progress on all vehicles, and we should see some fantastic restorations roll out of there in the fairly near future!

Next week is Winter Staff Conference in Midland Texas, so expect a few pictures and stories from the road!

For the most part, I will let the pictures do the talking for me.

Tail Turret Success!

Congratulations to Armament Project Lead Nate Timm for the successful operation of the B-25's Bell Tail Turret Assembly! Nate worked with Ray Miller to finish the hydraulics, bleed them, and get the system running. There are still a few things to be done, but we officially have an operating Tail Turret! Great Work!!!

Tail End of Project Tail Turret

This year will be the first year that "Miss Mitchell's" tail turret will operate since the aircraft has been in CAF hands. It will be, as far as I know, the first CAF B-25 to have a functioning tail turret system! Nate Timm has worked incredibly hard to make this happen, and with the parts collected during the restoration of "Miss Mitchell" and parts that he has found, the project will soon be finished. Nate and Ray Miller tested the hydraulic systems after Ray created hard lines, and Nate ran the power to the front of the aircraft. The test was successful! The system still needs to be bled properly, and once it is, expect to see video of it operating on this site! Great work Nate and Ray!

Maintenance Time

The majority of work around the hangar is still maintenance of the aircraft. There are some of the usual faces around, leading the work, but what is surprising is the number of new faces that are helping get the work done! Keep it up and we will have a fantastic flying season! Just to give perspective... I had 70 photos to choose from. I decided that I would have someone different in each photo. I even had to leave a couple of people out (don't worry, they're on the blog all the time!)

The Outside Air

Another installment of 'The Outside Air' brings us to sunny Texas, at the Centex Wing of the CAF. Their group houses the B-25 "Yellow Rose", along with a number of other warbirds. They are now affectionately calling their hangar "The Cobra Den" due to two quite rare aircraft. They are operating a P-39 Airacobra, and restoring a P-63 King Cobra.

Motor Pool keeps Motorin'

Having a nice place to work makes all the difference in the world. The Motor Pool is proving this, by rearranging, organizing, building and discarding the excess. Their efforts are really starting to show through, as they finish the insulation wall and start placing items in their appropriate locations. Great work guys!

Marching to the Beat

A number of the members joined in for the Winter Carnival parade. It was not the warmest of days, but certainly not the coldest. We were able to bring the 1941 Plymouth Staff car, complete with heater, as well. It was a great way to get the word out about the CAF, as we handed out hundreds of leaflets with information about the museum. Thanks to all who attended, all of whom willing dressed the part! If you're interested in participating, talk with Bill Atchison in the Motor Pool. He already has half a dozen appearances lined up for the year!

Blog Update - 14January to 01February

Good Afternoon Everyone!
Keeping on track with the Blog, I have a rather large update for you today. The activity at the Wing is booming... amazing for such a cold month! It's fantastic to see the enthusiasm, forward progress, and even better, the number of active members! Since Brian Strom was so busy, and took close to 500 pictures in the last few weeks, I will break up the normal "Around the Hangar" essay, and cover a number of different topics.

The focus of late remains the maintenance of the aircraft. All aircraft are being worked on regularly, and are progressing faster than I have ever seen! This can be attributed to the efforts of so many of the members. Awesome work everyone!

The efforts in the motor pool to decrease costs related to heat are coming to a close. The insulating wall is finished, and everything has been put back into place, allowing for maximum space to work on vehicles. The 1943 Willys Jeep is the current target, with a number of suspension issues already being identified.

Several Wing members participated in the Winter Carnival parade by marching, driving and handing out MN Wing fliers. There were a ton of people on hand, and we handed out hundreds of leaflets.

If you are a member who hasn't been to the hangar in awhile, or are thinking of joining the CAF, stop down soon to meet the members and see the amazing progress at the Minnesota Wing!

A number of members made an off site visit to the C&P hangars to check out their B-25s, Betty's Dream and Lady Luck. Betty's Dream is a pristine example of a B-25, and is a great way to gain knowledge for our own projects.

A Cool Way to Start a Saturday

A few weeks ago, we were approached by Brandon, a Navy Helicopter pilot, who asked if we would be able to grant a favor. He and his girlfriend Deb wanted to get into the cockpit of Miss Mitchell. He went on to explain that he was going to ask her to marry him and wanted to do so inside the B-25. We thought this was a neat idea, and were happy to help.

Good Afternoon Everyone!

I hope you all had a wonderful Holiday! This year Christmas Day and New Years Day both fell on a Saturday, but that didn't stop some die-hard members from showing up at the hangar to work! I know, we're a bit nuts.

The Holiday season has been a good one for the CAF. We've gained a number of new members, all of whom are enthusiastic! I have had so many members and visitors comment on how busy the hangar is. We have people working on every aircraft, working in every area of the hangar, and a good sized group at the motor pool. It is amazing, and impossible for any one person to keep track of everything that is going on! This is so great to see, and has new and old members excited about being at the hangar!

Our efforts to cut cold at the Motor Pool are already paying off. The heat runs less and less, and the building stays quite warm. It will be a great place to work once the building projects are completed!

There are a number of new efforts being devised by the Wing Staff and Membership to increase revenue. If you have any suggestions for new revenue to pursue, let us know! We are looking for any way to generate funding, which will allow us to expand, update and procure new items in the museum!

Be sure to make an effort to swing by the hangar, especially on a Saturday, to meet some new members, see the new projects, and get involved with the CAF!

The Outside Air

Good Afternoon All,
I'm starting a new section called "The Outside Air". As opposed to our "Around the Hangar" section, it will focus on projects that are taking place outside of the MN Wing. These projects can be anything relating to what we do (i.e. Warbirds, Aviation, WWII, museums, etc.) so if you know of something interesting and would like everyone to see it, please let me know!

For this post, I have stumbled across a very neat restoration. Some of you may know of this already know about this, but for those of you who don't, I think you will find it to be a unique and interesting project! The Mosquito is a wood fuselage construction, and presents very unique problems when trying to rebuild it. Jerry Yagen's project has taken 18 years, and is taking place in New Zealand.

Blog Update - 29 November to 09 December

Good Afternoon All!
I've waited a week to post this blog update. As soon as I posted the last update, I ran across a new project that I wanted to share with everyone, but decided to wait until I had some more info about the hangar.

I'm starting a new segment called "The Outside Air". It will focus on different projects that are taking place around the world that relate to what we do in the hangar. Like "Around the Hangar" I would like to put up one project per update, so if you know of something cool in the world of warbirds, WWII, museums or aviation in general, let me know!

We've gotten a little further with the City of South St. Paul. They have approved a Conditional Use Permit that will allow us to do our events legally, as long as we get the sprinkler system in. Next steps are to agree and sign a lease, then get the bonding money going!

Bill Atchison and the Motor Pool team are taking strides to insulate the side bay of their building. A little bit of cost will save us hundreds if not thousands per year in heating costs. The effort is already making a huge difference, in heating and safety! They have a lot of work left to do, so consider spending some time helping them!

The B-25 is off of jacks, and will begin the major portion of the yearly inspection Saturday. First step will be to pull panels and covers, and then we delve in and get our hands dirty. The sooner we get the inspection done, the sooner we can start repairs and modifications. This will all take a lot of work, so if you are versed in the bomber, mechanically inclined, or just want to learn some of the details surrounding the aircraft, please stop by!

As always, there is a lot to do at the hangar... it's a little cold to start, but warms up well! Stop in any Wednesday and Saturday to see for yourself what is happening!

Midland Airsho

Airsho is always a great time! You get a chance to see old friends, meet new ones and see some of the rarest aircraft fly! This year, the B-25, P-51 and Harvard made the trip down. There was a slight feel of political tension, but nothing that overshadowed the excitement of having FIFI fly overhead!

P-61 Black Widow Update

A Ride in the PT-22

The PT-22 took to the air this year for the first time, and is being touted by the two current pilots as one of the most fun aircraft to fly. A number of members have already gone for flights, and many more will next year as well. This series of pictures, taken by pilot Alan Miller, is a run through of a typical joy ride. Around the Hangar

So much has been going on, even these pictures don't capture half of it! One new item at the hangar is a flat screen TV in the break room, set up so that the members can monitor activity on a newly installed security camera system! Another item to keep an eye out for, wireless high-speed internet throughout the hangar! It should be running within a couple weeks!

Blog Update - 25 September to 29 November

Holy Smokes the time gets away from me fast! It's been a full 2 months since we've updated the blog and I apologize! A lot has been going on at the Wing, and has kept the staff, as well as the membership, very busy. Since the last update we have finished out events season, finished our airshow season and begun the winter maintenance and repair of the aircraft, vehicles and buildings.

Maintenance has started on the B-25. It's currently resting on jacks as we begin the inspection process. The P-51 will begin its inspection very soon and the PT-22 is already well on the way to being done. The L-5 and BT-13 will be torn into very soon. In a slight twist, the Harvard has been moved down to Midland for the winter. A number of pilots requested to do this so that they can continue to fly throughout the winter. It should return sometime early April. If you'd like to help out, or just see what makes these aircraft work, come check it out!

The events season ended with a Halloween party hosted by the Wing. It went well, with a lot of great costumes, and a very age diverse crowd! It is great to see a younger group (high school aged) have such a large presence at our events! Their interest shows that our museum can be viable for generations to come. We're currently working with the City of South St. Paul to finalize the requirements for next years events, and our lease. Once those are done, we will begin the process of ordering and installing the sprinkler system and doors for the exits.

The motor pool has made significant progress over the last few months. Their efforts to seal the building against water and cold have taken a lot of work, but have already paid off. The current project is to put up a stud wall and insulate the small side bay. This will not only make the place look a heck of a lot nicer, but help to keep heating costs down in the winter. They need help to get all this work done, so consider giving them a few hours or a day of your time! They really appreciate any help they get!

The Wing, and CAF HQ, have had their elections. At this point, the Wing elections are still out, though there was only one candidate per office. The CAF HQ elections were full of political intrigue and turmoil. A small group of members was hoping to change the current direction of the CAF and get us back to "when the CAF was fun". I don't know about you guys, but I think it's pretty fun now. Either way, the membership, including a record number of MN Wing members, voted to keep us on the path we are on. I feel it is the best direction for the CAF, and that we will see great things in the next few years! Thank you to everyone who exercised their right to vote in the elections!

Hangar Dance!

The Fall Bombers Moon Ball occurred on a cold but clear day this year. Although the cold had the potential to turn people away, we had a great crowd! One of the things noticed by both members and attendees was the age of the crowd was starting to get younger. High School and College age were common, and dressing the part was also more prevalent than ever before. It was a good night, and everyone had a great time! If you haven't been to a dance, it is well worth it!

Fashion Show/Wine Tasting

The Fashion Show strays a little from our norm. Bringing vintage and handmade clothing, models and aircraft together, all within the setting of a WWII hangar, doesn't seem like it would work. On the contrary, the unique venue, along with some clever artistic direction, have made for a fun and interesting event! Adding a wine tasting brought the event to a new level, and we look forward to expanding and seeing the event grow!

Wings of Hope Charity Open House

The Open House is a great experience for all involved. A number of reenactors, vehicles, aircraft and people stop in to visit, see the sights and learn about WWII. On top of it, charities such as Second Harvest Food Shelf are featured and contributed to. Look for the Open House next year, it should be quite an event!

Hangar Improvements

The hangar is an ever improvable asset for the Wing. Some of the improvements can be made by simply cleaning up, throwing on some paint, and calling it good. Others take time, effort and may incur some costs. Either way, it's all helping the CAF move in a very positive direction!

Blog Update - 29July to 24September

Good Afternoon Everyone!
The airshow and fund raising season is winding down. We've worked very hard this year, and it shows! We've been able to make some safety upgrades around the hangar, been able to clean up and improve the look of the Minnesota Wing! I suspect the momentum will hold and we will see great things in the next few years.

Going back a ways, we held our Open House Charity Event in August. It was a success, attendance was good, and we sold a number of History Flights on the B-25. We had a number of veterans visit as well. Liz Strophus, a WWII WASP, took a flight with Alan Miller in the PT-22. She had a wonderful time!

That evening we attempted the MN Wing Hops and Props for the first time. We had a number of brewers bring in their different flavors of beer for tasting. The event, being new, wasn't very well attended, but we haven't given up on it! We plan to hold a Hops and Props next year, and beef up some of the advertising. It shows promise, just needs a little time.

A good example of how some things need a little time and a little more advertising is the CAF MN Vintage Fashion Show. Last year was the first year, and while everyone enjoyed it, it was not very well attended. We made a number of improvements this year, increased the advertising, and we were able to have a wonderful event, complete with wine tasting and vendor sales. It was very well attended, and incredibly well received. Everyone who helped make the event happen did a wonderful job!

Our Fall Bomber's Moon Ball was, as usual, a smashing success! It was a cold night, but people stayed warm by staying out on the dance floor. We are noticing a shift in crowd, even attendees are seeing it, as the presence of college age and high school age dancers is increasing. This is VERY promising, not only for the success of the dance, but it shows an interest in our history and that era in particular. We're seeing a LOT of people, members included dressing up in period clothing, which is very exciting! Everyone works very hard to put on these dances, and the Wing appreciates all the help. Thank you for making it a success!

As stated, the Minnesota Wing has a great future ahead. We look forward to the next challenges, and have a wonderful membership team that has made all this progress possible! Thank you for all you do!

FLUGTAG!

Flugtag (or Flight Day) was conceived in 1991 by the owner of Red Bull (Energy Drink). It took place in Vienna, Austria and the world record flight (195 ft) has been undefeated since then. Over the years, the Flugtag has expanded around the world, and holds events many times a year, in many states and countries. On the 24th of July, it was held in St. Paul, at Harriet Island, in front of crowd of more than 90,000 people (more than any other Flugtag event). "Major Trouble and the Dirty Dixies", a team gathered by Jason Franke (son of member Glenn Franke) came up with the idea to model their flying craft after Miss Mitchell. They worked closely with Bob Wiplinger (owner of Wipair) and came up with a very good representation of Miss Mitchell. A lot of engineering, time and testing were put into the craft, and it was worth it! The aircraft was pushed from the 30 ft high platform, released from its base and cleared the world record, flying 207 ft!!! Congratulations to Major Trouble and the Dirty Dixies, and Wipair for their accomplishment!

Expect to see the flying machine at our Charity Open House on August 14th.

DC-7 Flies Again!

On July 4th of this year, a 6 year restoration came to fruition. Though not a warbird, I believe we all find an interest in the restoration of significant aircraft. The aircraft flew from Opa-Locka airport in Miami. Congratulations to the restoration crew on a beautiful aircraft!

Geneseo Airshow

I've heard more than once that the Geneseo Airshow is one of the best in the country. Certainly it pales in size compared to Oshkosh, but it brings a variety of interesting aircraft together for a unique venue... a grass strip! Alan Miller rode, rather cramped I assume, in the back seat of the P-51C to Geneseo, joining pilot Doug Rozendaal on an adventure to the East.

Getting to Know the Guns

Flying Cloud's annual Airshow (AirExpo) was a great way to spend a weekend. We had a number of members participate, and were incredibly successful! One member, Nate Timm, took some time out to get to know the B-17 a little better. Nate has been a member for about a year, and has taken an interest in the turret systems of the different aircraft, and has been the driving force behind Miss Mitchell's turret restoration.

Helping with Maintenance, cleanup, PX, Museum, they are all equally important, and vital to the Wing's success. Keep up the good work guys!

Blog Update - 12June to 28July

Good Morning Everyone!
I'm finding that a monthly blog update will be more achievable with our hectic schedule. I hope this is okay with everyone, but it will help me also gather interesting content.

The last month has been incredibly busy, and I'm very likely to have forgotten something in here, so bear with me. We've been flying the PT-22 to a number of events, and the pilots are becoming increasingly knowledgeable on the aircraft. It's a crowd pleaser for sure, having a continuous group around it at shows! I see great things for that little aircraft.

The other aircraft have been busy as well, all making appearances at the Lakeville Pan-O-Prog and the Wings of the North Airshow in Flying Cloud (save for the L-5 which had engine trouble). Both events were incredible successful for us, PX and rides were sold, and B-25 tours are bringing in around $1500 per weekend (WOW!). Thank you to all the members who made the effort to attend these shows, aboard the aircraft or by attending on their own. We've had great support from people, and it has been making for a more successful B-25 program!

We've been involved in a massive cleanup in the hangar and the motorpool. We are focusing on getting items properly stored, organized, and reducing the flat surface space, since we use it much less than we used to. It's been hard work, but shows a lot of promise for making the hangar an easier place to work and visit. Thank you to all who have helped so far!

The General Staff decided to take their summer meeting on the road, and hold it at the Minnesota Wing! Staff members from HQ arrived on Friday, and began to meeting mid-day. The main meeting was held on Saturday in the morning. Once the meetings were completed, the General Staff joined the Wing Membership for a BBQ put on by Iron Chef Ron Legg. It was a good experience for all involved.

Last but certainly not least was the Red Bull Flugtag event. Flugtag is a man-powered glider competition in which teams build and attempt to fly their crafts off of a 30 ft tall platform. This gets a lot of press around the world, and is the first time it has happened in the Twin Cities. Some time ago, Jason Franke, son of CAF member Glenn Franke, approached us about using Miss Mitchell as a template for their flying machine. They were chosen to compete, one of 30 teams out of hundreds, and with the help of Bob Wiplinger (owner of Wipair) they broke the World Record, held by the owner of Red Bull, and set in 1991 when Flugtag first started! Way to go guys!

The Ryan PT-22

We received a great donation about 2 years ago, a Ryan PT-22. It was in great condition, but needed some repairs and an engine overhaul. It was worked on by a number of members, championed by Doug Olson, and although it had some paperwork difficulties, it was a great project! We had hoped to fly it on the 16th of this month, but had an opportunity arise last week. Chris Hughston, of the Rio Grande Valley Wing, had come up to train our L-5 pilots. He is also a PT-22 pilot, and offered his assistance. We accepted, and watched the PT-22 make a perfect first flight!

The Hamilton Flies!

The Hamilton, previously owned by Gary Lysdale, has been sold, and is heading for Kirkland, Washington. It took off with quite a crowd watching. The best part, by far, was the low pass performed on its way out.

Nurses Get Pinned

One of the most interesting event this year has been the Nurses Pinning Ceremony that took place at the hangar. Nurses who have graduated from schooling have family or friends place a pin on them, signifying their completion of the program. Over 500 people were present for the ceremony, all fitting in the hangar on a rather cold day. It was a great event!

Motor Pool Madness

A lot of work takes place next door to the hangar in a run down building that holds the boilers once used to heat the hangars during WWII. Now it houses our collection of WWII vehicles. The group in the Motor pool have done a great job of cleaning up the building, fixing up the vehicles, and are working on restoring and painting the vehicles, to make them pristine examples.

A Trip to Honor

Recently the Honor Flight from Minneapolis to Washington D.C. took place. The Honor Flights are to take aging WWII Veterans to visit the WWII Memorial that was recently built. One of our members, Glenn Franke, acted as a chaperone for Mr. and Mrs. Brihn, both of whom are veterans of WWII. Glenn asked for people to write letters to the Brihns thanking them for their service. A group of local 5th and 6th graders participated, and a couple of their letters stand out.

Dance Day!

As most of us are aware, Dance night is preceded by work, a LOT of work. Setting up the hangar, cooking the food, getting the band ready, and that is just what happens the day of, not the weeks and months prior to the event. The dance itself requires a lot of work as well; parking, counting money, working the gate and the bar are just a few of the jobs. And the end of the dance requires cleanup, which takes until about 2 a.m. Despite all this hard work, we all still manage to have a great time!

Blog Update - 01May to 11June

Greetings Everyone!

A full month has passed since the last update... something I never wanted to let happen... I truly have no idea where the month of May disappeared to! At any rate, here we are in June, and the Minnesota Wing is in full swing!

The L-5, BT-13 and Harvard MK IV all participated in Memorial Weekend/Day Flyovers. The P-51 (Red Tail) was at an airshow in Missouri and returned on Monday. The B-25 stayed home and was great to have since we had a number of visitors

The Hangar Dance was a great success! We had around 700 visitors, and everyone seems to have had a great time. We had more members on hand to help set-up, work the dance, and tear-down than I have seen in a LONG time! Thank you everyone who helped!

The motor pool had an appearance and WWII Days in Farmington. A number of the vehicles were displayed and helped add to the flavor of the event! Between donations and giving people rides in the vehicles, the motor pool has begun to pay for the many repairs being performed on the vehicles, including new structure, engine overhauls, exhaust repairs, interior work and paint!

Amy Lauria presented our proposal to the Minnesota Historical Society Grant Committee a week ago. The presentation was for a steel mezzanine and storage equipment to more appropriately house our increasing collection of artifacts. This grant will cover most of the costs, save for work performed by the membership, which will include demolition. Feel free to talk with Amy or myself about the details. We are very excited about the possibilities to expand the museum, and to create a proper space for storage of our artifacts! We received a warm reception from the group who clearly was aware of our existence and our mission!

The L-5 ground school took place last Thursday, followed by a few solid days of training. The L-5 flew more hours in the three days of training than it has in the last two years! The interest level for that aircraft is fairly high, and I suspect we will see it operate a lot more.

Saturday was the MN Wing Awards Banquet! We had a fantastic group attend, and everyone had a great time. Ron Legg made sure the desert was extra special, and had a cake specially designed for the Wing.

One event that we all have been waiting for... the first flight of the PT-22. Chris Hughston, our L-5 trainer from Texas, has extensive PT-22 time, and offered to test fly it. We accepted, and Chris took to the air early on Saturday morning! He did a number of manuevers, making sure that everything was working as it should. When he landed, he stated that it was a very straight airplane, and a great flier! Congrats to Doug Olson (crew chief) and all the members who helped to get the aircraft back to flying condition!

Thank you all for your dedication to the CAF, it has been a great start to the season!

Doolittle Raider Reunion

It was an honor to be a part of history this month. "Miss Mitchell", along with 16 other B-25s, overflew the USAF Museum, and were able to meet, chat and dine with 4 of the remaining Doolittle Raiders (out of 8). This gathering was larger than any in recent history, equal to that of the filming of Catch-22! The pictures speak for themselves. What a trip!

Hangar Sale

This is our second year of a Hangar Sale for the community. People are welcomed to bring in their goods and sell them, and the membership gathers up things that are no longer needed and sells it off. Last year saw a huge profit due to hardware that was for sale. This year, we didn't have as much for sale, but that didn't stop us from making a decent profit, and have some fun!

Around the Hangar - Finishing Up Maintenance

Okay, so maintenance will never be finished, but we are rolling the aircraft out from a maintenance heavy winter, and have begun to operate some of them. This set of pictures covers the last month of work, and it was a LOT of work! Thank you to everyone who helped make it happen!

Motor Pool Make-over

One of the most extensive and impressive changes over the last year has been the Motor Pool. Located just East of the main hangar, this small building was at one point nearly useless for vehicle work, it was so cluttered. It has taken a lot of hard work, but the guys in the motor pool, led by Bill Atchison, have turned the space into a proper vehicle maintenance facility. A lot of work is still ahead, but huge strides have been taken, even in the last few days! If you haven't seen the motor pool for a year or more, you have to stop by and see it! Even better, give Bill and the guys a helping hand to keep the vehicles going!

Blog Update - 26March to 30April

Ouch, I look at the last date I did this and it's shameful! My time after work has been spent in working on maintenance and in meetings for the hangar. No excuse I know, but I SHOULD be able to update everyone more frequently with maintenance coming to a close.

Down to business. We are just starting to ramp up our flying and fundraising season. We have had our first even, the garage sale, and our first airshow, the Doolittle Reunion. Both were a huge success, and were so due to the dedication and hard work of our membership!

The hangar updates, being done with the funds made available with the bonding bill, is being worked out with the City of South St. Paul. Once we have reached an agreement for our lease, we will move forward with upgrading the hangar. We very much look forward to the day we begin construction!

In the next few weeks we have a number of activities, airshows, and prep-work to get done. The dance is coming up, and our goal is to have a beefed up marketing campaign, getting the word out to as many people as we can, and bringing in crowds which will hopefully exceed our expectations. Information that I received while writing this... After the St. Joseph's Airshow in MO, the P-51C "Tuskegee Airmen" will return with "Miss Mitchell". According to my sources, the Mustang will be home for a couple of weeks, then back on the road. Be sure to stop by!

Winter Staff/Fifi

This time of year brings the annual Winter Staff Conference at CAF Headquarters in Midland, TX. The MN Wing Staff visited, sharing ideas and stories with other Wing leaders, and learning as much as we could about the CAF as a whole, where we are going, and what we as a Wing can do to help make it all happen! We also were able to get an update on Fifi's progress. For those of you who don't know, Fifi is the CAF's B-29. It had engine issues, and has to be refitted with a new style of engine. It will be the only flying example of a B-29 when the work is completed!

Silent Wings

Some of our members have been visiting a group who has been undertaking a terrific restoration, with the goal of rebuilding a CG-4A Glider. These gliders were built in massive numbers by the Northwest Aeronautical Corporation out of the Twin Cities. One of the subcontractors during the War, Villaume Industries, has allowed volunteers to use some of the space in their building to manufacturer parts and assemble the glider. Blog Update - 12February To 25March

Good Afternoon Everyone!

I hope I remember how to do this whole Blog Update thing! It's been a really busy month, especially around the CAF, but that's no excuse for not updating, and I hope you didn't get too exasperated waiting! I'm having trouble remembering what has happened over the last month and a half, so bear with me as I struggle through!

The first, and most exciting topic of the day is our latest venture with the State of Minnesota! As many of you have likely heard, we have been working with Senator Metzen and his staff, along with the River Heights Chamber of Commerce, to add the CAF Minnesota Wing to the 2010 Bonding Bill. The bill has been signed into law, and includes $150,000 grant to the Wing for upgrades to our hangar! The work will start soon, and will focus on ADA and code related upgrades, all moving towards a large, long-term goal laid out by the Wing Staff! We are pursuing a number of other grants, private funding and more to help make our goals a reality!

Work around the hangar has been steadily increasing. Miss Mitchell has a number of new additions, some of which are aesthetic, and some very functional. The inspection on the bomber is almost complete, as is the engine install. We have a bad cylinder being changed on the left engine, but we are right on time for our goals of completion by the 3rd of April. The BT-13 inspection is very nearly complete, though the Harvard and L-5 are just beginning. Little to no trouble is expected with both of these aircraft, and they should be back together and flying very soon. The PT-22 is receiving its final fit-and-finish items, and will be ready to fly when we have warm enough weather to start training.

The Motor Pool has found some serious corrosion needing repair on some of the vehicles. If you are experienced in body work, please stop by and talk with Bill Atchison... He needs some help to get the major projects rolling! They have nearly finished with the yellow Tug, which has gone through some repairs, and should have that online by April 3rd.

We have a new PIO (Public Information Officer) on board! Joe Palmersheim, an editor with one of the local newspapers, has had a life-long interest in warbirds, and recently got involved. He has gotten his hands dirty on a number of projects, but is really excited about helping us with marketing, press releases, the newsletter and more! We wish to welcome Joe to the position, and look forward to working with him!

The majority of the Wing Staff spent last weekend in Midland, Texas for Headquarter's Annual Winter Staff Conference. A number of different Wings and Squadrons were in attendance, looking to share ideas, and figure out ways for all of us to increase membership, funding, education, and safety. It went well, and it shows that Steve Brown's strategies, although sometimes controversial, are working, and making the CAF a more successful entity. A lot of good information was collected, exchanged, extorted and we will be looking to implement some of these new ideas throughout the year!

Members of the Wing, keep an eye out for the Straight and Level newsletter! The newsletter will be sent out in early April... there is a plan to have the newsletter go out quarterly, and on a much tighter schedule. Congratulations to Crew Chief Doug Olson and the entire PT-22 crew! On Wednesday the 10th of February an FAA Inspector stopped by to look over the PT-22. Upon completing his inspection, we were issued a Standard Category Airworthiness Certificate. This is needed to legally be able to operate the aircraft, and to give rides if we choose to.(Photo Thanks to Brian Strom)
